Lap Band Complications Can Affect Anyone
When you under go lap band surgery, you must realize that it is not a light
undertaking. Surgery is always serious business and gastric surgery in general
can be more risky than some other types.
As bariatric surgeries go though, lap band is one of the least riskiest compared
to gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, roux en y, etc.
Complications most often associated with lap band are things like:
Of these gas pain is usually only temporary and follows the initial surgery. Slippage and erosion are more serious. Slippage and erosion both require medical care to resolve.
I had slippage after being banded. How I discovered it was at my niece's house for Thanksgiving. I was eating and just kept eating. Normally with lap band you get full fast, but I this time I didn't. I had eaten about double the amount I normally eat when I realized that I had eaten that much. I stopped right away for fear of having a PB, but that never came.
The next day I was hungrier than normal and I also noticed that I could again eat more than normal. Sensing something must be wrong I made an appointment with my surgeons office. It was three days before I could get in.
At the appointment they performed an x-ray and determined that my band had indeed slipped. The fix was fairly simple. The band would be deflated and should go back to the proper spot. Once that happened it was refilled and I didn't have anymore problems with it.
My sister on the other hand had erosion and the band had to be removed to let the stomach heal. She was without a band for about 8 months. During this time she really watched her diet and was able to keep from gaining weight.
